The Cushion Cut
Cushion Cut Buying Tips
When searching for a cushion (as well as other fancy cuts), we highly recommend that you examine the stone carefully at different angles and under different lighting to make sure that the stone does not have a bow tie pattern. The bow tie is evident across the center of an improperly cut diamond and creates an unwanted shadow. If looking for cushion cuts, we recommend that you choose one of SI1 clarity because SI graded diamonds are usually eye-clean (containing no eye-visible inclusions). In terms of color, many jewelers in the past have opted for lower color grades of I or K color because the yellow tint compliments the antique look in antique ring settings. But for those that want the universal white color diamonds are usually associated with, we recommend you get a G color or better. We also suggest getting a classic pillow shape with the length-to-width ratio of 1.10 to 1.20. But for those that want more squared cushions, we recommend getting a cushion with a ratio of 1.05 or less. And because when purchasing a diamond, it is important that the diamond is accompanied with an EGL or GIA certificate or lab report to guarantee the stone’s authenticity. The certificate or lab report is basically the blueprint of a diamond as it lists all the characteristics of the diamond. An additional factor to consider is to have a budget in mind. Usually the typical engagement ring cost is at least two months salary.
Cushion cuts are one of the best shapes for fancy colored diamonds because of the stone’s strong dispersion. Cushions are able to disperse colors located underneath the diamond very evenly. Therefore, when cushions are put in platinum or white gold settings, they reflect another sparkle and an even white color. The shape is also perfect for various settings ranging from antique-styles to more modern designs. Cushions are the ideal shape for those that want to transition from the traditional round brilliant into something more unique and still contains high brilliance and sparkle.
